Gordon Hill's story about Catch 22
« Back to The Book That Changed My LifeYossarian, a US bombadier in WW2, is serving in Europe in a war that seems to be governed by lies, bafoonery and banality. The book follows Yossarian as he tries to claim insanity to be medically discharged and sent home.
My Story
We were given Catch 22 to read by our English Teacher (Mr Gibbon, I think) in 5th year. It was completely different from most of the, to be frank, boring books we had covered prior to that. On reading, it was met with confused looks, scratching of heads, childish giggles and eventually challenging debates.
The book introduced me to the wonder of fiction and how it can transport the reader to a new world. This new world was one of confusion, banality, profiteering, crazy accidents and humorous despair (if that's not an oxymoron!). Episodes such as Major Major, who was only promoted because of a clerical error and would only accept appointments when he wasn't there, through to the fact that Yossarian, the main character, could not be medically discharged on the grounds of insanity as it was deemed that wanting to escape the world that he found himself in, in itself proved his sanity.
Since then I have gone on read some great books, some good books and others that been set aside after the first few chapters. All have, to a greater or lesser degree, provided the ability to wind down, challenge me, inspire me or just wile away a few hours.
I'd just like to say thank you to Mr Gibbon, and Joseph Heller, for introducing me to this magical world.
