Fiona MacIntyre's story about The Amazing Mind of Alice Makin
« Back to The Book That Changed My LifeThis book is about a girl called Alice. Alice is growing up in post-war London: a grey world of old bomb sites. Her step dad sort of beats her. Her escape is her imagination, which always brightens her day, but when a new boy starts school, her mind starts playing tricks on her. She’s oddly drawn to him, and whenever they are together the world becomes a more exciting place.
My Story
'The Amazing Mind of Alice Makin' is the book that changed my life because when I was in primary 5 I wasn’t very good at English. Then I bought 'The Amazing Mind of Alice Makin' because my mum was telling me to buy a book and read it. I read the first chapter of the book and I loved it. I read the rest and read it a few more times after that. Then in primary 7 I had an English test and I was in the middle group and I got them all right, so my teacher (Miss MacLennan) asked me if I wanted to try the higher group's test.
I said I would and on the first higher test I did, I got them all right and on the second one I got one wrong.
I felt really, very happy. I was moved up a group in English. The book made me read a lot more. People have even told me I read too much! I am glad I chose to read this book because now I think I am a bit better at English. The book has also had information on the Second World War and I think I learned a lot from that. The book had an amazing story-line and I enjoyed it.
I think Alan Shea is very proud of his book. The book also changed the way I spoke a bit. I use to miss out some words in sentences, but the book changed that as well. As I started to read more, I read more sophisticated books which helped the way I talked.
Reading a lot has now made me want to become a writer. I want to write adventurous like the book. The book encouraged me to go out and enjoy life whilst I still can, because quite a lot of people in the book die and I think that they didn’t enjoy their life that much so I want to enjoy mine. The book was an amazing and interesting story. I would enjoy reading it over and over again!
