Emma Walker's story about Alice in Wonderland
« Back to The Book That Changed My LifeA young girl named Alice is sitting under a tree, bored and weary of her history lesson. Suddenly she spots a White Rabbit running towards a rabbit hole. Alice chases after him unaware of the wonderland of excitement that awaits.
My Story
I first read Alice in Wonderland when I was seven years old. Whilst I was a ferocious reader, at seven I still needed pictures to accompany my storytales so when I was handed a book without any pictures inside I wasnt happy. That is, until I started to read. The story of Alice falling down the rabbit hole, running in a caucus race, meeting Cheshire cats and Mad Hatters whilst eating cakes and drinking potions which made her grow ans shrink was more than enough to stimulate my imagination into overdrive. I was as high as the caterpillar by the time I finished the novel and wanted more.
Instead of moving onto Alice's next adventure with a looking glass, I picked up a pen and began to write. Unware of plagiarism at such a young age I re-wrote every last word of the Unabridged version making just one vital edit - the word 'Alice' was replaced with my name, 'Emma.' With that small but essential re-write I had become Alice, and every adventure I pursued after that was done so with the knowledge that the White Rabbit may just be around the corner.
I now have a framed painting of Alice peering into Wonderland by my front door to remind me that every day is an adventure and nothing is ever quite as it seems.
