Debbie Solomon's story about 1984

« Back to The Book That Changed My Life
Author: George Orwell
Synopsis
Hidden away in the Record Department of the sprawling Ministry of Truth, Winston Smith skilfully rewrites the past to suit the needs of the Party. Yet he inwardly rebels against the totalitarian world he lives in, which demands absolute obedience and controls him through the all-seeing telescreens and the watchful eye of Big Brother, symbolic head of the Party. In his longing for truth and liberty, Smith begins a secret love affair with a fellow-worker Julia, but soon discovers the true price of freedom is betrayal.

My Story

When I read this book, it was because people had mentioned that this was where the idea of 'Big Brother' came from and also 'Room 101'.
It was a surprise to me to realise that the idea of a big surveillance machine running the world had come from a book from a long time ago. I found it amazing that so much of what Orwell wrote about had come true in some way or other. I think that with the internet, CCTV cameras and constantly changing technology it is impossible for people to really control their privacy anymore and this book reminded me that I should be a lot more careful about what information I make available about myself. Hopefully Orwell's vision never really comes true!
