Corinne Watt's story about The Time Traveler's Wife
« Back to The Book That Changed My LifeThe unique story of Clare and Henry who have known each other since Clare was six and Henry was thirty-six, and were married when Clare was twenty-two and Henry thirty. How is that possible? Henry has Chrono-Displacement Disorder: his genetic clock resets and he finds himself pulled suddenly into his past or future. The Time Traveler's Wife details the effects of his time travel on their passionate love for each other.
My Story
I have been a lifelong fan of time travel novels, relishing the many and varied ways to be transported. As a child my favourites were “Playing Beatie Bow” by Ruth Park and “Charlotte Sometimes” by Penelope Farmer. So when the title of this book first caught my eye on a charity shop book shelf I was instantly intrigued.
I did not expect the obsessive hold this book quickly creates. It draws you in, you are Claire and you so desperately love Henry despite the feeling of hopelessness and finality in his condition. You weep more than laugh, but that said there is a lot of joy in this book too, knowing that two people can love each other so strongly despite all their experiences being chopped up and out of order!
The book is incredibly well written, it explains where you are at each point in the story despite the great leaps back and forward in their timelines. It can be read again and again, I never tire of it but just fall more in love. This book is the ultimate expression of how love can triumphs over anything – even Chrono-Displacement Disorder!
