Cooper Hay's story about The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas

« Back to The Book That Changed My Life
Author: John Boyne
Synopsis
The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas is set during World War II and is about a German family who move house because of the fathers' work as a Nazi Commandant. The youngest child Bruno, goes exploring one day and finds a little boy his age called Shmuel who is a Jew and living in a concentration camp. Bruno doesn't know what a concentration camp is but he decides that he wants to live there with Shmuel. So the two of them played for a day and then they were told they had to strip off and get into a room with all the other men at the camp. This is a brilliant story with lots of excitement and a mind changing ending.

My Story

I have seen the film and read some of the book of this, it is a very touching and interesting story. It didn't sound very good when I heard about it but now I've seen it and read it, I think it is brilliant. I don't normally like sad endings but this I didn't mind so much. This book didn't actually change my life, it certainly had a very long-lasting impression on me though and it made me think if that was ever to happen again I would be terrified. I never really thought about what a concentration camp was until I watched the film. I say five stars *****
