The day I left by Caroline Taylor

My whirlwind romance turned into marriage and divorce within 9 months.  My so called soulmate turned out to be one nasty person.  Not only using his hands, but the way of emotional abuse was far more hurtful.  I have been asked to write a short story about one day in my life.  Married to him, everyday was the same, until one day I walked out and never returned.  That was one of the hardest things I have ever done and 4 years later I have never looked back - just forward.  It was the end of a long battle.  Packing up the house, looking around at an empty space - and I kept walking.  Even knowing what I was giving up.  My home, a safe place to bring up my children.  I talk about safe - staying with him, safe, NO!  Going alone, scary, but safe.  To live day after day with a man like that never changes.  You just wake up and go to sleep and just the same in between.  My days now are very different.  In every way possible which is why I chose ‘The day I left' because instead of it being the end, it was the beginning of my life and everyday, I believe that more and more.
