The Comet's Child - John Ward
The Comet's Child - John Ward

Fin lives out in the forests with a nameless woman. A man called Ragg comes to fetch them, but Ragg and the woman are murdered, and Fin is taken captive. Another young boy named Mika, who lives in the shadow of the great ice cliff, longs for adventure but his tribe say he is too young. He decides to set out on his own to see the great world that his grandfather tells him about.
The Comet’s Child focuses on Fin’s struggle to find his identity and Mika’s longing to go to the prestigious Golden College far, far away. It is a fantasy book as it is set in another world, and it contains some mythical creatures.
I think the novel is designed to be read by boys of around 11-14, as the boys in the novel seem to be around this age. I think that Fin was portrayed as a more believable character than Mika because Fin makes more mistakes than Mika does. The fact that the novel is set in a different world where you do not understand the geography adds to the feeling of mystery throughout the novel.
John Ward ends The Comet’s Child with a cliff hanger, but it was not dramatic enough and too easy to imagine everything being resolved.
Overall, I enjoyed it, and would read another book by the same author.
