Throughout Skint! there are a number of points within the storylines which present useful opportunities to break from the story to carry out a supporting activity.

Consequences:

  • Carry out an activity where your group collectively chooses an ending for Carly and writes a piece about what happens to her in 6 months time. You can also use the resource ‘comic life’ as an approach for your group to continue the story - Comic Life  
  • Provide copies of the budgeting sheet for your group to create a budget for Carly.
  • Finish by creating a goal setting activity for Carly.
  • Refer to the Legal Services Commission website for further information about support and legal advice around debt and provide information to your group, as appropriate.

  • Work out the odds of winning the lottery.
  • You could use the activity sheet debt smashing strategy to work out debt repayments.
  • Carry out an exercise to work out interest payments for borrowing money and actual amounts that need to be paid back.
  • Refer to activities found on the suggested web site BBC Skillswise for numeracy percentage exercises and further support.

  • Carry out an exercise using the living costs sheet to work out Jamie’s living costs.
  • Carry out a ‘money-off voucher’ exercise working out % savings using the numeracy exercises from BBC Skillswise.
  • Create an exercise using the budgeting sheets. Ask your group to fill in two budget sheets, one where Jamie includes all his ‘down-time habits’ and one where he uses the money to invest in his future business.
