Running For Scotland by Amy Smith
My special day was when I ran for Scotland. I remember a few weeks before when I received a letter. The letter said that I had been selected to run the last 3 miles of the London marathon. I was so excited and speechless.
The team left on the 11th of April at 9.00am. I didn’t arrive in London until 6.30. It was a really long journey and it was very tiring. The team travelled by bus and altogether it took about 9 and a half hours. The bus driver put DVDs on to keep us amused.
We stayed in a lovely Royal college. I and my team went on a jog all around it to see what it was like and to be nosey. Ha-ha! We were only there for two days, left on the Saturday to get there and then came home on the Sunday.
It was very hard to get to sleep as all the planes were taking off, then others were coming back in. Breakfast wasn’t that great. There were already bags of food made up for the kids. The coaches and parents got to pick what they wanted to eat. I just had some of my mums toast.
I was starting to get excited when we were told we were leaving to go to the course soon. On the way we saw the London Eye which was interesting, but it didn’t even look like it was moving.
Philips Idowu started the race. Before the race at the start line, me and my friend Katey were interviewed by BBC but it wasn’t shown on TV. Overall I was 35th out of 200 people. I was really pleased. Also the 11-12 year old girls in Scotland won as a team and I was one of the four people that helped to do this.
I was disappointed when it was all over because it had been a great experience. I think that maybe if we had left on the Friday it would have been better because it would have set an atmosphere. I also feel this way because it felt like it was all crammed in the two days.
If I got selected again I would be up for it again because it was a great experience and its one that I will always remember.
