Review:
This is the story of a girl called Elfie who has been living on the streets since her mother died. The local policeman takes her to the Pig and Whistle Bar and Orphanage. She is looked after by a kind family called the Bigsbys. At first she does not fit in. In her bag, she has evidence of her father’s whereabouts. She decides to run away to track him down. On her journey she is captured by a strange family she names ‘the DoGoods’. She manages to escape and returns to the orphanage. The Bigsbys are relieved to see her well and they help her find her long lost father.
This is an adventure story with many exciting twists and turns and lots of detail that is very believable. Elfie is quite stubborn, adventurous and determined, especially when it comes to finding her father! The author describes Elfie’s loneliness in a way that made me feel sorry for her, but made me want to know more.
I would recommend this book to children of my age that like adventure stories and have a big imagination. I give it a 5* rating. It deserves to win the Royal Mail Book Awards!
