Review:
I, personally, feel that Ostrich Boys is a genuinely good book.
The setting is distinctly clever, the writing style is smooth and great and the plot is a fantastic and original idea.
The best part, however, is the characters. Ross is dead from the start, and yet throughout the novel you get a distinct sense of his personality and influence, both what his friends saw and who he really was. Blake is the perfect balance of his own individual person with a personality and an average, normal teenage boy that you can empathise. Kenny has the gift of being able to annoy you so much you want to smack him, and pull at your heart strings at the same time. Sim is charming, funny and loveable, and yet you can see his flaws.
But by far my favourite character is Ross’s sister. Despite the fact that she has a very minor role, I feel that, for me at least, she makes the book.
As a writer myself, I have always believed that, although a plot is necessary, it is the characters that make it a story, and these characters make this an exceptional one.
