Radio Lab Application Guidelines
Application Guidelines
Places on the Lab are limited to ten. All applicants should have work professionally published or, in the case of dramatists, professional productions of their work. Applicants must live and work in Scotland.
All applicants need to submit an idea for a proposal for an original radio play with their application to be on the Lab. The idea should not be an adaptation of an existing short story, novel, stage play or film script and should not be a monologue. The proposal should contain the following:
1. A maximum 100 word paragraph summarising the plot of the play. Think of this as the ‘billing' that might appear for your play in the Radio Times or a daily or weekly newspaper.
2. A two page synopsis giving more detail about the play. The synopsis should tell us who the main characters are; where the play is set; what the play is exploring; and in brief the main developments in the story. There is no set formula for how to write this - it is not a marketing exercise! Just tell us in your own words and own style about the play and in doing so if you can reflect the tone and humour of the piece, even better.
3. A maximum 200 word paragraph explaining why you want to write this play. e.g. It's an exceptional story or experience that can be best shared with listeners through drama; the themes within the play are worthy of exploration and you have a personal reason or relevance for wanting to explore these themes; it's entertaining, it's inspirational, it will be a treat for the audience!
4. A paragraph explaining why this play will work best on radio and what appeals to you about writing it specifically for radio.
5. Two sample scenes for your play lasting no more than 3 minutes each.
All of the above should be submitted on A4 paper using font size 12, single spaced.
Your application should also include an extract from your published or performed work and a copy of your writing CV and any writing credits.
Applications to be received by Friday 17th July by no later than 4.00pm.
