Author details

Maggie Ritchie

I’m a freelance journalist who lives in Glasgow with my husband and our nine-year-old son.

Paris Kiss is my first novel, published by Saraband.

I graduated with distinction from the University of Glasgow’s MLitt in Creative Writing, when I won the 2012 Curtis Brown Prize for Paris Kiss and was shortlisted for the Sceptre Prize.

The novel, a fictionalised biography of the French artist Camille Claudel who had a scandalous affair with Rodin, was longlisted for the Mslexia First Novel Competition in 2014.

About writer's work

I write about women struggling to find freedom and fulfilment – both personal and artistic – in a world where social mores are set against them. My heroines are brave, intelligent, flawed, creative and determined.  I enjoy writing about artists, and like to take my characters to another country to test their mettle. My first novel, Paris Kiss, was set in 19th century bohemian Paris. I am currently working on my second novel, set in post-colonial Southern Africa, and planning my third, set in early 20th century Scotland and China.

Awards: I won the 2012 Curtis Brown Prize for Paris Kiss and was shortlisted for the Sceptre Prize, and longlisted for the Mslexia First Novel Competition in 2014.
