Biography

Born in Hamilton in 1952, I am married with 5 children. I live with Kay, my wife, in Tain in the Highlands. I have lived in the Highlands since 1986 and have found it a wonderful place to live, bring up kids and work in the creative arts. I have worked in touring theatre since 1985, before that I worked in arts/entertainment as a ceilidh band drummer, circus hand and an illustrator. Originally my theatre work was with Clown Jewels creating company devised productions. Since receiving my first full writing commission in 2000 I have found a career as a playwright and have gone on to form, with Euan Martin, our own writer-led theatre company, Right Lines Productions. I also direct, write and animate for my children’s theatre company, Cartoon Theatre which is a combination of animation and live performance. I have led workshops in all these areas of work.

About writer's work

My work, when self-initiated, has always involved an element of comedy. Whether it is in the form of a spot cartoon or a 90minute play. I wrote and directed “The Sweetener” about the life of the inventor of canned laughter which was an exploration of the world of comedy and laughter, so I have an active interest in this area. I feel it is immensely rewarding and challenging field to work in. It combines the creative forces of inspiration with the hard work of honing and re-drafting, in a way that is incredibly satisfying. It is my enthusiasm for the process that keeps me going and makes me enjoy discussion and analysis of it with others. Recently 80% of my work has been co-written and I find this a very rewarding way to work.

I particularly enjoy working in the Highlands and servicing a community audience and providing them with theatre that is often set in a context with which they are familiar.
