Born Edinburgh 1941. Educated in Edinburgh and at Magdalene College, Cambridge. Former Creative Writing Fellow, Edinburgh University and William Soutar Fellow, Perth. Married, now lives in Perth.

Novelist, short story writer and literary critic. Fiction has a metaphysical and satirical slant, and has been described as ‘Scottish Gothic’.Winner of two Scottish Arts Council Book Awards and several Bursaries.
