Fred Freeman

I am currently Professor of Scots Language & Scots Song at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Glasgow. A graduate of Aberdeen and Edinburgh universities, I have taught Scottish literature at The School of Scottish Studies and in the English Department of Edinburgh University, was appointed Senior Associate Member at St Antony's College, Oxford for two years in the late 1980s. In the late 90s, I was writer in residence at the Aberyswyth Arts Centre and artist in residence in East Ayrshire. I have been artistic director of a Scottish Festival within Swansea UK City of Literature, a Scots-Welsh Festival in Fife.

For the past six years, I have delivered a series of lectures on Scots language, literature and music to staff at the Burns Museum (Alloway), as well as an extensive series of workshops for primary and secondary pupils at The Dumfries Museum and at The Children's Book Festival in Ireland. Over the last 20 years I have drawn upon my extensive musical background in producing CDs of literary and musical import, including the only recorded Complete Songs of Robert Burns (Linn Records, 2003), A' Adam's Bairns a tribute to Hamish Henderson (Greentrax, 2004), and The Complete Songs of Robert Tannahill (Brechin, 2017).
