McNicol & Jackson Badger the Mystical Mutt

We are McNicol & Jackson, the team behind the Badger the Mystical Mutt series of illustrated children’s books for 5 – 9 year olds. As we both speak fluent dog, we have been able to translate Badger’s adventures into books. In another life, McNicol was a BBC Children’s publicist whilst Jackson worked creatively as an artist with a variety of organizations for children and adults with additional needs. McNicol is originally from Ayrshire and Jackson hails from Liverpool. Both now live in Glasgow with Badger, a 6ft dog who likes to accompany them to all book appearances and visits and lark about with giant maraccas, music and live magic.

About writer's work

The Badger series of books subtly addresses, with humour, issues such as bullying, disability and prejudice. Friendship and self-belief is at the core of all the books.

The Daily Record listed Badger’s first book at no. 1 in their children’s chart of books with a message and described the books as having: “Pitch perfect subtlety and wit”

Cathy Cassidy said: “A fun, fast-paced romp of a read for younger readers…terrific stuff!”

Barry Hutchison said of Book 8: "Scotland's most famous monster meets the world's most magical mutt in a tale that will make you laugh, cheer and develop a craving for buttery toast!"

"By inviting authors and stars such as Badger into our libraries, we hope that our city's youngest residents will be inspired to harness the power of books and explore their own imaginations through the wonder of reading." Frank McAveety, Leader of Glasgow City Council

Badger the Mystical Mutt was the highlight of World Book Week in Fife.  Badger's appearance was a delight for every child and brought big smiles to the adult faces too making it ideal as a family or schools event.  Badger sessions are great fun. They offer a perfect way to hook children into reading and are a great first step to lead children from picture books to becoming independent readers.  Brilliant and highly recommended!” Maggie Gray, Service Development Team Leader, Libraries (Young People), ON with Fife Cultural Trust

The British Consulate in New York listed Badger in their Top 12 reasons why 2012 was great.

The School Librarian Magazine said: “There are some underlying morality themes that should allow vigorous class discussions”

The List said: “A toast-loving magical hound who has been winning fans in book shops, libraries and schools.”

Since the first book launched in August 2011, Badger the Mystical Mutt has visited over 1000 schools, bookshops, libraries and book festivals throughout the UK and in New York.

Following the success of series one (six books), McNicol & Jackson are currently working on the 2nd series of Badger the Mystical Mutt adventures, with the 3rd book in the 2nd series due for publication in 2017 (their ninth book).

Current events and projects

McNicol & Jackson are available for 1 hr sessions with P1 – P4. This includes a 20 minute reading, music and performance including live magic and giant maraccas from their costume character, Badger the Mystical Mutt, and a Q&A session. They can also provide activity packs. Main themes discussed are bullying, friendship and self-esteem. Reluctant readers particularly seem to engage with Badger live and ‘in the fur’.

They have worked throughout the UK at a variety of book festivals, libraries and schools as well as with assessment centres and autistic schools.

Badger works best with large audiences, up to 300+, in a hall with a projector and screen (for powerpoint presentation of illustrations) and plenty of room to lark about. He can work equally well with audiences of 50, as long as he has plenty of room to manoeuvre and perform his magic tricks.  If you've never met Badger 'live and in the fur' before, then the best way to describe his events is 'Tommy Cooper meets Morecambe & Wise'(for kids). Prepare to be dazzled!

Other work

In 1996, Lyn McNicol won Cosmopolitan Magazine’s Women of Achievement Award for Media.

Badger the Mystical Mutt receives regular fan mail from young readers and fans, and he has several large folders to prove it!

Initial development work has been done on taking Badger’s character forward as an animation series.
