The Edinburgh International Book Festival

The Edinburgh International Book Festival is a unique celebration of words and ideas, intent on expanding horizons. The largest festival of it's kind in the world, every August we open our garden to over 600 authors from 40 different countries and over 200,000 visitors to join together to celebrate stories and the power of words.

Opening horizons, inspiring readers and sharing ideas places education fundamentally at the heart of the Book Festival's activity. For children, the focus is firmly on participation and inspiration through hands-on workshops, storytelling sessions and hundreds of free activies throughout the Festival.

Our unparalleled RBS Schools Programme is an outstanding week of exclusive events visited by over 13,000 pupils from all over Scotland in 2007 offering:
  • Events on maths, science, history and modern studies as well as English comprehension and modern languages.
  • An exceptional line-up of world-class specialists discussing key topics for education professionals
  • an Outreach Programme visits socially disadvantaged and geographically remote children.
We also support visitors with a freely accessible audio archive of past events on our website  and supply schools with classroom resources and tips to help make the most of their visit.
