The National Library of Scotland

The National Library of Scotland is a reference library of international importance housing millions of books, manuscripts, music, and maps covering virtually every subject. NLS is also the world’s leading centre for the study of Scotland and the Scots. Through the collections, we chart the global and historical influence of Scots at home and abroad, while also recording and reflecting the ideas and cultures of the world. NLS has many collections of international importance, including the John Murray Archive, which has a dedicated schools programme.

We offer:

  • Workshops and events for primary and secondary schools on a wide range of subjects
  • CPD sessions for teachers / trainee teachers, both on-site in the Library and throughout Scotland
  • Free downloadable and printed resources for use in the classroom
  • Online access to the NLS catalogue and to web features on the Digital Library
  • In addition, the NLS education staff also work with individual teachers and schools to develop projects linked to the Library collections
