A Word in Your Lug!
![]() |
Scunnered, bonnie, crabbit, dreich . . . although Scotland’s rich heritage is reflected in the vocabulary children use every day, many are completely unaware that the words they use are not in fact English but Scots. “A Word In Your Lug!” set out to raise awareness of the Scots language amongst class teachers and pupils and provide an opportunity for young people to express themselves in their native tongue. Funding was obtained through A Curriculum for Excellence and the Scottish Book Trust and the project was organised and managed by Renfrewshire Council’s Cultural Co-ordinators.
Work with the schools began in April 2006 with a CPD session for 20 primary teachers. Pupils went on to write recipes, poems, stories and fairy tales, demonstrating their creativity, imagination, flair and – perhaps surprisingly – a firm grasp of the Scots Language. Teachers were invited to submit examples of their pupils’ writing to be included in an anthology entitled “A Word In Your Lug!”
