Learning Professional: Susan Morton
We are delighted to introduce you to the winner of our inaugural Scottish Book Trust Learning Professional Award, Susan Morton!
Susan is school librarian at Inverclyde Academy, and since her appointment, she has had an amazing impact on the school and wider community.
In just one year at the school, Susan:
- Revitalised the neglected school library to create a vibrant hub, with pupils fully engaged in choosing new purchases to shape their library
- Secured a fully funded residency with local author Cathy MacPhail to work with an S2 class on writing their own anthology, culminating in a launch event for their printed book
- Created a comic book club to attract reluctant readers and encourage young people to produce their own comic books
These individual projects have combined with Susan's care and attention in recommending books to individual pupils to create a vibrant reading culture at Inverclyde Academy!
Speaking on the decision to honour Susan Morton, Sean McNamara of CILIP in Scotland who was a member of our judging panel, said:
'Susan is a thoroughly deserving winner of this award due to her outstanding contribution to the encouragement of reading and writing in Inverclyde Academy, a school in an area with high levels of deprivation. Susan took on a library that had been closed for a number of years and in less than a year has made fantastic strides forward with an array of projects for pupils...Susan is a truly inspiring professional.'

We believe that the work being done by teachers and librarians across Scotland to inspire children and young people to read for pleasure is worth celebrating, which is why we created this award.
Susan was nominated by her colleagues at Inverclyde Academy who recognised the phenomenal difference she had made to the profile of reading at the school. Have you or one of your colleagues inspired children and young people to read for pleasure? We would love to hear about it.
