Holocaust Memorial Day - Elizabeth Wein
To commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day 2015, Scottish Book Trust and the Edinburgh Inter Faith Association presented a day of schools events with the award-winning author Elizabeth Wein.
Elizabeth spoke to 500 S1 - 3 pupils about her novel Rose Under Fire which tells the story of Rose Justice, an 18 year old Air Transport Auxilary pilot who is captured and sent to the notorious Ravensbruck Concentration Camp in North East Germany.
Although Rose’s story is fictional, it is based on the real testimonies of women who survived the camp. Elizabeth discussed her research for Rose Under Fire – looking at the individual stories of some of the women who were imprisoned at the Ravensbruck Concentration Camp, and why it is so important that we hear their testimonies and remember them today.
We have produced learning resources to accompany Rose Under Fire and help you to explore themes of the Holocaust and personal survivor testimony with your pupils.
