Award-winning and celebrated author Elizabeth Laird visited Queensferry High School in South Queensferry on the 30th March to celebrate the launch of her latest book, The Prince Who Walked with Lions. After a great talk about the book, the story behind the book, and why she wrote the story, there were some very interesting questions from the pupils. Afterwards, Elizabeth was interviewed by a group of teens writing for Teen Titles, Edinburgh's books-for-teens magazine. Watch for her piece in an upcoming issue.
The Book
The British Army is circling the stronghold of the King of Abyssinia, under orders from Queen Victoria. Its mission is to rescue the British Envoy being held prisoner. Watching with terror and awe is the king's young son, Alamayu. He knows that his father is as brave as a lion, but how on earth can he and his warriors stand against the well-equipped foreigners? As battle rages, everything that Alamayu fears comes to pass. The fighting is cruel and efficient and when the brutal war is finished Prince Alamayu is left without his father, friends and his throne. But Alamayu is the son of an emperor – can he conquer his fear and show his tormentors that he has the heart, and the courage, of a lion?
