Gaelic and Scots Creative Writing Competition

This year we’ve worked together with Matthew Fitt, of the innovative Scots children’s publishing house Itchy Coo, and the Gaelic Learning Team at Learning and Teaching Scotland, to bring you a great writing competition for pupils aged 0 to 16, which pupils can enter in either Gaelic or Scots.

Although the deadline for entries has now passed you can still access and use the resources that were created for this project.

Competition Rules: 

Who?  Entrants must be aged between 0 and 16 years.

When? All entries must be submitted by Friday 30th October 2009.

How to submit your entry?
All entries must include:

  • pupil’s name
  • class teacher’s/librarian’s name and e-mail address
  • name, address and telephone number of the school or library

Where to send your entry?
Entries for Younger Writers (8-11) and Older Writers (12-16 years) should be submitted via
e-mail to: royalmailawards@scottishbooktrust.com

Entries for Early Years (0-7 years) should be posted to:

What can you win?
First, second and third in each category will win a selection of exciting new Scots and Gaelic books.

The first prize winner in each category will be invited to collect their prize at the Royal Mail Children’s Book Awards Ceremony in Edinburgh on Tuesday 24th November 2009. 

Runners-up will all receive a special Royal Mail Awards for Scottish Children's Books Awards certificate.

Judges
Matthew Fitt will judge the 3 Scots Writing competitions.
Learning and Teaching Scotland will judge the 3 Gaelic competitions

When will you find out if you’ve won?
Winners will be notified by Tuesday 17th November 2009. The full list of winners will be posted on the Scottish Book Trust website on Wednesday 25th November.

Groups who would like to take part in The Gaelic and Scots creative writing competition must register that you are taking part - go to registration and when you are asked which category you are judging select 'Gaelic' and/or 'Scots' .

The Gaelic and Scots creative writing competition pack will be available to download shortly. Those taking part in the competition are also advised to download the full reading group guidelines for the Royal Mail Awards. 

Terms and conditions

If you have been successful we will inform you by 13th November 2009. The winning entries will be reproduced (with acknowledgement) on the Scottish Book Trust website for the purposes of promoting the Royal Mail Awards. We regret that we cannot return entries. The judges’ decision is final and we will not enter into any correspondence. There are no runners-up prizes.
