Now the biggest UK children’s book prize, the Royal Mail Awards are an innovative nationwide reading project in which children and young people from every corner of Scotland read and vote for their favourite Scottish children's books of the year.

The awards are run across four categories:

  • Early Years 0-7 years
  • Younger Readers 8-11 years
  • Older Readers 12-16 years
  • Gaelic and Scots Creative Writing Competition

Individuals or reading groups in any school, library or bookshop in Scotland can take part in judging the awards in any or all of the following ways:

  • Reading the books in a shared reading scheme whereby older children read the shortlisted books in one age group category to younger children
  • Reviewing one of the books they have read and entering our review competition. Winning reviewers in each category will receive a £25 book token for themselves and a visit for their school from one of the winning writers.
  • Entering our Gaelic and Scots creative writing competition, the winner of which will receive an author visit to their school and book tokens for themselves.

The groups will read the shortlisted titles between the shortlist announcement on 6th May 2009 and the voting deadline on 14th November, and will be able to vote online or by post for their favourite books. They can also enter the review competition for the best reviews, and enter the Gaelic and Scots Creative Writing competition to develop their writing in Gaelic and Scots.

The winners of the awards, the book review and creative writing competitions will be announced at a special awards ceremony in Edinburgh November 2009.
