Sponsors
Scottish Book Trust has pursued its charitable aims for over forty years, building a reputation second to none for the quality of what it delivers. Today, our innovative award winning programmes are admired both at home and abroad for their attention to detail, strong educational and charitable ethos, literary merit, and professional delivery.
We pride ourselves in knowing what a sponsor wants, and in understanding where their aims match ours so that strong sustainable partnerships can be created. With a host of national and international programmes there is much to choose from. We work with great care and commitment in close partnership with all our sponsors to ensure that our mutual aims are achieved, and that they are widely acknowledged through peer awards, print and broadcast media. If you'd like to find out more, we'd be delighted to speak with you.

The following are some case studies of successful partnerships developed with sponsors:
- The Royal Mail Awards for Scottish Children's Books
- The Scottish Friendly Children's Book Tour
- On The Money
- The Jura Malt Whisky Writer Retreat Programme

The Royal Mail Awards for Scottish Children's Books
The Royal Mail has sponsored our awards for Scottish Children's Books since 2005. The awards are a hugely successful readership development project, in which thousands of Scottish children from every corner of the country read and vote for their favourite books of the year across 4 categories. Moreover, they provide an essential tool for the Royal Mail to fulfil its core sponsorship objectives of:
- Investing in literacy through literature at community level across Scotland - the awards take place in schools and libraries right across Scotland
- Reiterating their ongoing commitment to the preservation of the Gaelic language in Scotland - there is a bespoke Gaelic category for the book awards, and children and young people in Gaelic medium classes across Scotland are invited to submit reviews of the Royal Mail Gaelic children's book of the year
- Underlining the Royal Mail's belief that every child should have access to quality books, whatever their personal circumstances are - the project reaches pupils schools in some of the most socially deprived areas of Scotland
- Nurturing the writing skills of Scottish children and young people - a competition for children to submit reviews of shortlisted books runs alongside the book awards
- Attracting first-class media coverage for the project and the company
The Scottish Friendly Children's Books Tour

"Scottish Friendly's long-term sponsorship of the Children's Book Touring Programme with Scottish Book Trust has helped us achieve our wider business objectives. The sponsorship has helped build brand personality, given us access to new target audiences, generated wide press coverage and has allowed us to invest in communities through a programme that's of immense value to children." (Calum Bennie, Marketing Manager, Scottish Friendly)
The Scottish Friendly Assurance company is Scottish Book Trust's longest-serving sponsor. Our partnership launched in 1998 with the Words on Wheels touring programme, now called the Scottish Friendly Children's Book Tours. Together we take national and international children's authors and illustrators to schools and communities the length and breadth of Scotland. The 2007 tours included a trip to every school in the Western Isles. The sponsorship enables Scottish Friendly to:
- Bring some of the best children's authors to isolated or deprived communities across the country
- Foster a love of books, reading and writing amongst Scottish children and young people
- Provide opportunity to buy books in areas where there are no bookshops
- Secure high-quality local and national media coverage
- Increase brand recognition in schools and communities across Scotland
A bumper programme is planned to celebrate the 10th anniversary of our relationship in 2008, including a huge five-city tour of the current children's laureate, Michael Rosen.
On The Money

"It has been a delight to work with an organisation that shares common goals and values in relation to the education of our young people. Our partnership with the Scottish Book Trust and Learning and Teaching Scotland for the "On the Money" project clearly demonstrates that a collaborative approach between different sectors can deliver exceptional results. Each organisation brings particular strengths and expertise to the project but it is the working together that has been central to the successful production of "On the Money" and supporting resource. Through our partnership we have been able to meet our objectives for proactively developing young people's financial capability."
(Tina Livingston & Rona Doig, Education Investment Managers, Standard Life)
Standard Life has been working with Scottish Book Trust, and the third project partner, Learning and Teaching Scotland over the last two years to develop a new resource tackling financial education for Primary School children. Sponsorship of On the Money has enabled Standard Life to:
- Add value in an area of financial capability where a gap in the market had been identified
- Take a proactive approach to supporting and developing financial capability
- Support the development of the right attitudes and behaviours for dealing with financial matters
- Lead the sector in an innovative approach to financial education which combines literacy and numeracy
This project has been developed in a model of partnership, with the authors and project managers working closely with teachers and pupils all the way through to ensure that the book and accompanying support materials are interesting, useful, user friendly and most importantly fun.
In 2007 the On the Money project was the joint category winner for Innovation in Corporate Citizenship at the Scottish Financial Enterprise Innovators Awards.

The Jura Malt Whisky Writer Retreat
Whyte & Mackay are renowned distillers of whisky. Based in Glasgow, their whiskies are enjoyed around the world. Whyte & Mackay and Scottish Book Trust have been working together for over two years and during that time have created an unparalleled international literary programme which has focused on aligning the Jura whisky brand with creativity, relaxation and high quality literature.
At the heart of our collaboration is the Jura Malt Whisky Writer Retreat Programme. This unique programme offers writers the opportunity to spend a month writing and living in the Distillery Lodge on the remote and beautiful island of Jura off the west coast of Scotland. The Retreat Programme has received significant international media coverage including Newsnight, The Today Programme, The Guardian, The Times, International Herald Tribune, The Herald and The Scotsman. This will continue in 2008 with the broadcast of a special Jura themed series of short stories by writers who have taken part in the Retreats on BBC Radio 4. We are also publishing an anthology of work inspired by Jura which will be available in the shops and make a unique corporate gift.
Whyte & Mackay and Scottish Book Trust also developed The Isle of Jura Festival of Scottish Writing in New York as part of the launch of Jura whisky in the USA in April 2007. New York audiences got the opportunity to sample Jura malt whisky whilst listening to some of the best Scottish writers including Andrew O'Hagan, Ian Rankin and Denise Mina.
