The Scottish Arts Council

  • In recognition of its strategic importance to the literature sector in Scotland, Scottish Book Trust was awarded foundation funding from Scottish Arts Council in 2007/08 for 3 years.
  • This forms the principle part of Scottish Book Trust's core funding, and is supplemented by sponsorship, project grants and other sources such as venue hire and book sales.

Arts & Business

Scottish Book Trust has enjoyed an excellent working relationship with Arts & Business (A&B) for many years and has been able to take advantage of A&B's experience in linking with the business world to create successful and sustainable partnerships and to enhance the skills and experience of its board of directors.

SBT has been consistently shortlisted for the Arts & Business annual awards, winning both the Scottish and UK overall awards in 2004 for its partnership with Scottish Friendly Assurance for a national touring programme with Children's Laureate Michael Morpurgo.

Several members of Scottish Book Trust's board of directors have been recruited from the Arts & Business Board and Skills Banks and Mentoring programmes, with one board member, Alan Gibson, being declared Business Volunteer of the Year in the 2005 A&B Scottish Awards.

In 2006, Scottish Book Trust was successful in winning funding from the A&B Scottish Executive New Arts Sponsorship and Awards scheme, to create a new two-year writer retreat programme on the Island of Jura, in partnership with Whyte & Mackay's Isle of Jura Whisky.

Scottish Government

Partnership with national government has long been a key element of Scottish Book Trust's work. We aim to influence public policy and provide quality information as the basis for campaigning for readers, writers and educational change.

Scottish Book Trust has received direct funding from the Scottish Government towards several diverse elements of its programming.

Reading Rich project with NCH Scotland encouraged looked after children to read. A formal, independent evaluation is under way, whose findings it is hoped, will influence future government policy and resources for the literacy skills development of looked after children in Scotland.

As part of the programme for Scotland's 2006 and 2007 Tartan Week celebrations, Scottish Book Trust was commissioned by the government to bring a showcase of Scottish contemporary writers to the attention of the reading public and writing communities in New York and Washington DC.

Scottish Book Trust provides the secretariat for the Parliamentary Cross Party Group on Writing and Publishing.  The group meets periodically during each parliamentary year to celebrate Scottish writers and the Scottish publishing industry, to feed industry concerns into the parliament, to explore ways that parliament can be aware of and support new initiatives, to publicise forthcoming parliamentary events to the industry, and to consider mounting joint events with a view to promoting Scottish publishing and writing.

Scottish Book Trust is also developing relationships with other arms of the Scottish Government and the Scottish Parliament, offering advocacy across all areas of literacy skills development, the promotion of readership in Scotland and the nurturing of its writing talent.
