Vicki Gausden

At school I drew on the back pages of my notebooks, at college I scribbled on lined paper during lectures and at university I chose do to an art degree. A lifetime of pencil marks on paper has taken me to where I am now.
I grew up in various parts of the world, most notably Cyprus, Germany, rural Hampshire and Cornwall. The passions in my life are my animals, bold colours, fabulous patterns, books and shoes. I collect old tins, suitcases and fountain pens.
I begin with a dipping pen and ink before scanning and colouring digitally. I draw from my imagination and only use reference where necessary. I love truly great stories and my aim is to write and illustrate a book that will really mean something to somebody. All of my work begins with a pen and ink drawing but is coloured digitally. I have the rough black and whites for most of my work.
Shortlisted for The Nationwide Mercury Prize and exhibited at The Hospital Gallery, Covent Garden April 2007.
I’m relatively new to all of this and still discovering what I enjoy doing. I’m giving my first solo workshop at the Festival of Scottish Writing on May 23rd 2007. This will be to a mixed group of twelve adults- all of whom are interested in illustration. It is supposed to be an introduction to illustration as a business and I will also be showing my portfolio. I guess I’ll see how this one goes!
I have also worked with Vivian French at the Edinburgh Book Festival (in 2005) as a guest illustrator. This involved drawing on a big board in front of groups of children but Vivian did all of the talking/organising.
