Susie Maguire is a writer best known for short stories. As well as two collections – The Short Hello and Furthermore - 21 of her stories have been broadcast on BBC Radio 4 and Radio Scotland, including “The Day I Met Sean Connery” (Reading of the Year) and “Barry Norman's Tie”, both featuring the 'alter-ego' character Marina McLoughlin (Marina's encounter with a pre-knighthood 'Sean' was also televised on BBC 2). The subject matter and tone of Maguire's work runs across the spectrum from light, quirky and funny to dark, acerbic and disconcerting. An experienced broadcaster and stage performer, with a background in acting, stand-up comedy and television presenting, she is an Arvon tutor (Moniack Mhor) and, as one half of SoundCheck, runs 'inspirational' performance skills workshops for writers.About writer's work:
I became a writer by accident; story-telling on paper was an offshoot of scripted and improvised solo performance on stage and TV, and my first stories were mostly comic/situational first person accounts of random incidents and bits of their narrators' personal philosophy. Later, this led to writing more intense/dramatic stories. I resist identifying my own themes too much, but would suggest much of my work focuses on getting inside 'outsiders', and on issues of trust, fear, love, jeopardy and longing.About writer's events and projects:
Available to do readings and talks on general fiction writing, creating characters, drama & comedy, short stories, as well as offering tailored creative writing workshops. I also give group & individual tutoring on writing for performance, and rehearsal for performance.
