Biography:
metaphrog are the Franco-Scottish duo Sandra Marrs and John Chalmers. They have been creating comics, graphic novels and illustrations for over fifteen years. John is from Scotland, and earned a PhD from Strathclyde University in micromachining. Sandra grew up in France and gained a degree in Arts and Letters. In 1994, she decided to move to Scotland. That same year, John was returning from working in the Netherlands. Their meeting was a catalyst; together they created metaphrog. They live and work in Glasgow.
About writer's work:
Generally, John writes, while Sandra illustrates, but the creative process isn’t always that straightforward. Their Louis series of graphic novels have received several prestigious industry award nominations and critical acclaim worldwide, and have been enjoyed by all ages. Julie Burchill championed their work in The Guardian, and publications as diverse as i-D, Publishers Weekly, The School Librarian, The Herald and Libération, have praised their work. Their short stories and illustrations have been published in manifold publications, and they always enjoy working on new and exciting projects. They were recently commissioned by the Association for Scottish Literary Studies to adapt Edwin Morgan’s poem The First Men on Mercury into comic form: in October 2009, for National Poetry Day, over 32500 copies were released in all Glasgow Secondary Schools.
About writer's events and projects:
metaphrog regularly visit festivals, libraries and schools all over Britain, to talk about comics and graphic novels. They are available for talks and workshops, for any age or size of audience. Their events are highly interactive and have proved popular with children and adults. They love sharing some of the secrets of making comics, and talking about the creative process involved in visual storytelling and character design. Graphic novels also provide a great access to literature and literacy and the various topics covered extend across the curriculum. For workshops, they can offer one-off sessions, or a series, where longer projects can be developed (for example, creating a whole comic). They are also happy to tailor sessions to specific requirements. Recent events have included workshops and talks at the National Library of Scotland, Edinburgh International Book Festival, Word, Imprint Festival and many more.
