Biography:
Sally was born in Wiltshire, England. After five happy years at the unique Art Secondary School in Bath, Somerset, dreaming of stardom as a fashion designer, she was persuaded to go off to Manchester Polytechnic to train as a teacher instead! Whilst teaching in comprehensive schools in Nottingham and Hull, she studied part-time and gained a silver medal in City & Guilds Fashion. Sally moved to Scotland with her husband in 1976 and then became a freelance artist and art tutor.
About writer's work:

I enjoy working in tone or black and white, using charcoal, pencil, pens and brush with inks and acrylics. I’m usually asked to use colour for the book illustrations, and the cover artwork always has to be bright colour, so I use acrylics, gouache and watercolour, watercolour pencils, pens and pastels. Mixing media adds depth, movement and interest.

Favourite subjects are: portraits, trees, plants and animals.
I try to show a strong sense of movement in all my images, and include humour whenever I can.

Working for East Lothian Council for many years, I guided several “banner-making projects” with adults, depicting local history and personal memories, using fabrics and paints, and I’ve tutored drawing and painting classes for adults, and children’s art workshops (out of school hours).

Personal commissions for public and private display include: illustrations for orientation panels, wildlife guides, Christmas cards, local scenes, booklets, fabric banners and painted murals, portraits of animals and people.
Most of my work involves a lot of research (and worry!) to get historical, biological and technical details correct, and I always aim for perfection, but it seems elusive!

It’s great working very closely with authors to bring their characters, etc. to life (often as the stories develop, because there is a very tight deadline!)

About writer's events and projects:

Talks to any age group - adults and children - with demonstrations of my favourite techniques and media. I show original artwork and development roughs for my book illustrations, and other commissions if required. Willing to travel.
Art workshops included in any event for children and adults where time allows.

Please contact me through my agent, Kathryn Ross of Fraser Ross Associates.
