Elinor BagenalBiography:
Lynne Rickards was born in Canada but returned to her roots in Scotland in 1992. She has been a writer of sorts all her life, working as a translator in Toronto, a proofreader in Montreal and an editor in Glasgow. Her early career included a brief stint as a children's illustrator for Crabtree Publishing Company, and this has proved invaluable in her picture book writing. She can visualise a story beautifully, and then let someone else do the hard work of illustrating! Lynne began writing for children when her own kids were learning to read. Several of her books feature penguins in starring roles because her son loves penguins. For her daughter, whose favourite author is Jacqueline Wilson, Lynne writes in the first person as a shy and troubled ten-year-old.
About writer's work:
Growing up, I was strongly influenced by the poetry of AA Milne and Doctor Seuss. More recently I've discovered the wonderful work of Shel Silverstein and Julia Donaldson. All this set me off on a rhyming path when I first started writing, and my first published work was a pair of poems for Macmillan. Even when I write prose, rhythm is all-important.? The themes I explore most often are identity (fitting in) and friendship.
About writer's events and projects:
I am available for readings in schools, libraries and book festivals, creative writing workshops and talks to young people about the publishing process (of a picture book). I am happy to read to 0-5, 5-8 and 9-12, and do workshops and talks with the 8-12s. During school term, I'm only available within Glasgow, Bearsden & Milngavie (where I can arrive by public transport and get back in time to collect my kids from school).
