Biography:
I was born in London but my family moved to Australia when I was six. I’ve enjoyed a variety of careers and was a teacher, a head teacher, a lecturer and honorary Sub-Inspector with the Royal Constabulary of Papua New Guinea, an Hotelier in the North of Scotland and a Bookseller in Edinburgh. Maybe it is no surprise that I am one of Scotland’s professional storytellers! I enjoy travelling and seeing new places but my passion is for horses and if I can combine the two so much the better.
About writer's work:
My work reflects a lifelong love of history, fairytales, myths and legends from around the world and especially the countries in which I have lived; Australia, Papua New Guinea and of course Scotland. Some of my recent writing has been commissioned either by local authorities or by The Scottish Storytelling Centre.
About writer's events and projects:
One of my greatest joys is sharing my love of stories and story writing with children and adults- this has to be fun- for my audience and for me! I work with any age group and especially enjoy family events. I do the “traditional” author event in schools libraries and at festivals; run workshops for all age groups and have held several residencies as a storyteller/writer. All my events are devised to fit the needs of the school, library or other events organisers. Themes I cover include all the basic curriculum topics including bullying, health and safety and local history. I love the opportunity to make Scottish history come alive.
Working with special needs children and adults brings me great joy and I have run writing projects for adults for local authorities. Some of my recent projects include the development and piloting of Storyboxes – helping children’s writing through first developing oral skills and storymaking. Another project was a residency of a full week working with just two classes on Global Citizenship as past of a whole school venture.
In September 2006 I represented Scotland in Helsinki for a celebration of European Language Day working with representatives from five other nations in a day-long series of events that included a workshop for teachers.
