Biography:
Jane McKie’s first collection of poetry, Morocco Rococo (Cinnamon Press), was awarded the Sundial/Scottish Arts Council prize for best first book of 2007. She runs a small press, Knucker Press (www.knuckerpress.com), which is dedicated to bringing writers and artists together in book and pamphlet form. Her latest collection is When the Sun Turns Green (Polygon, 2009).
About writer's work:
I am very interested in myth and folklore, and mythic images and themes often inform my work. I love the process of collaborating with artists -- both in terms of facilitating collaboration between others and working with artists myself. I have made several pamphlets in which I work with artists, the latest of which is called Witnesses (Knucker, 2010), in which I respond to a sequence of paintings by the artist Koert Linde. I love stories too, and enjoy writing fiction as well as poetry. I am interested in children’s fiction, particularly fantasy.
About writer's events and projects:
I am able to do readings, residencies, workshops, one-to-one tutorials and/or appraisal of creative work. I have taught both poetry and prose on the MSc in Creative Writing at the University of Edinburgh. I am interested in drawing on traditional tales, folklore and myth in poetry, in any written response to visual art, and in exploring metaphor, although I would be delighted to work on any aspect of craft too. I am happy to work with all age groups.
