Jan-Andrew Henderson was brought up in Dundee and Kirriemuir, Scotland. After completing a Masters in English Literature and Philosophy from Edinburgh University, he went on holiday to the USA, where he lost his return ticket and didn’t come back for several years. He prides himself on having done lots of ‘interesting’ jobs - having been, at one time or other, a financial consultant, dishwasher, pen engraver, mechanic, fake French waiter, cocktail barman, stamp designer, pepper salesman Easter Bunny, balloon decorator, tour guide, muralist and playwright/actor/director at a children’s theatre in New York. In 1999 he founded Black Hart Entertainment in Edinburgh, which runs ghost and history tours and began writing (not surprisingly) history and spooky non fiction. The Town Below the Ground, The Emperor’s New Kilt, The Ghost That Haunted Itself, Who Wants to Be an Edinburger, The Wee Book of Edinburgh and City of the Dead were published in the next five years. Then he had a son, Charlie and switched to writing kids novels. He now writes dark and twisted thrillers for older children.
About writer's work:
As Jan-Andrew Henderson, my books for younger readers (Secret City, Hunting Charlie Wilson) were very much in the Harry Potter vein. My latest books as J A Henderson (Bunker 10 and Crash) are much darker psychological thrillers. The children in it are not necessarily good and don’t necessarily win in the end.
About writer's events and projects:
In the past I have given history lectures, writing and drama workshops. What I’m undeniably best at, however, is tours. I was a walking tour guide for seven years.
