Eye BooksBiography:
I spent two years working as a doctor in a remote mission hospital in Sierra Leone just at the outbreak of civil war. My first book, Green Oranges on Lion Mountain ended with my hospital burnt down by rebels. I wrote in the epilogue that I would return, but although that made a nice ending, it’s not the sort of thing you actually do with three small children and a country torn apart. However in 2008, my hospital was rebuilt and I finally kept my promise – sending my children to the local school for 6 weeks. Green Oranges has just been re-released with an update of my recent adventures. In between times my work as a Highland GP and mother distracts me from writing as much as I would like. My second book, The Accidental Optimist’s Guide to Life, tried to address this dilemma of saving the world without a babysitter.About writer's work:
Green Oranges has been described as Bridget Jones with a scalpel and rebels. My original pitch was that I wanted to save the world, save Lives, save my soul, lose weight and find a man and even though I have only achieved the last of these, my writing has the underlying theme of trying (and generally failing) to be a better person. With the re-release of Green Oranges I hope that talks and book sales will contribute funds to support the rehabilitation of Serabu Hospital. Meanwhile I am trying my hand at fiction, using similar themes. About writer's events and projects:
I am happy to do readings, residencies or workshops. I have been guest speaker at Arvon (Moniak Mhor) on writing from life, Ross-shire Readers Day, Highland Libraries Book Groups, Writer’s Groups, and also given more generic talks about life and work in Africa eg: to schools books day, the National Tangent Luncheon, WI, Inverness Siroptomists etc.Links to other websites:
