Biography:
I am Scottish writer born in 1957 who lives in Fife. After pursuing a career as a paralegal, in the 1980s I became a writer, initially of fiction and non-fiction and then of poetry. I am an experienced Creative Writing tutor having worked for more than ten years with the WEA and other adult education providers offering classes in poetry and all types of prose writing. For many years I was also actively involved with Kaleidoscope, the Fife Women Writers group, and helped organise literary events in Fife and beyond. From 2005 to 2010 I held the post of Artistic Director with StAnza, Scotland’s International Poetry Festival which takes place annually in St Andrews. In 2010 I was appointed as StAnza’s Festival Director.
About writer's work:
My first full collection of poetry, Even the Sea, was published by Red Squirrel Press in 2010, and two earlier pamphlet collections were published by HappenStance Press, The Last King of Fife (2005) and A Sampler (2008). I also edited of the StAnza anthology Skein of Geese (The Shed Press, 2008) and commissioned and edited Migraasje, a short collection of versions in Scots and Shetlandic of poems by Dutch Frisian poets. My own work has appeared throughout the UK, in Ireland, the USA and in a range of European countries. I have had poems in Chapman, The SHop, Magma, Mslexia, Smiths Knoll and many other magazines, journals and anthologies, including New Writing Scotland, and my poetry has been translated, including into Lithuanian and Macedonian. In 2008 I was the winner of the Second Light competition for my poem Snow Hare, and Even the Sea was shortlisted for the 2010 London New Poetry prize for first collections. I often travel within the UK and beyond to give readings of my poetry, and also talks and workshops, and I am an experienced chair of poetry and other literary events. I also regularly write poetry reviews.
About writer's events and projects:
I am happy to give readings of my poetry, or talks on aspects of contemporary poetry or poetry festivals. I’m also happy to deliver workshops on poetry or prose writing, fiction and non-fiction to beginners or more experienced writers, and if requested to work on a wide range of themes and topics, including history, nature, wildlife, relationships, and myth. I inaugaurated the poetry film programme at StAnza, and some other recent projects include researching and delivering poetry with a golf theme, the development of young poets, and collaborations for translation of poetry.
