About writer's work:
I write poetry, short stories and plays. I enjoy delving into the minds of characters and discovering their flaws and what makes them tick.
My previous jobs have included trainee journalist, librarian and English teacher. All of these jobs have sparked characters in my head. In particular, my experience of teaching pupils with emotional and behavioural problems has fuelled my imagination and was the catalyst for my play, Birdhouse.
I also gain inspiration through tutoring secondary school pupils and in attending Aberdeen Writers Circle who meet weekly at Aberdeen Arts Centre.
I am currently working on a short story called Angels which focuses on a puppeteer who develops an obsession with a window dresser in a fancy dress shop. I also hope to convert an existing short story called Cinammon into a novella. Aside from short stories, I have started working on a second poetry collection which draws on inspiration from powerful female icons and I hope to gain a publisher for this in 2011. I plan to start work on a new play in June 2010.
About writer's events and projects:
I am available for poetry and short story readings at writers’ group meetings, books festivals, social functions and in schools. I would explore the themes of relationships, diverse cultures, society’s issues and the comparison of human behaviour with animals. Although most of my readings to date have been for an adult audience, I am also experienced in working with children in a teaching and tutoring context therefore I would be equally happy with a teenage or pre- teen audience.
I am also available for poetry or short story workshops, either for adults or in schools. I am particularly interested in focusing on the use of comparison techniques such as simile or metaphor in poetry (for schools) and in showing how a metaphor can be extended in a poem (for adults). My short story (and poetry) workshops would all include the use of visual stimulus, such as photographs, DVD or interesting objects.
I recently performed with The Blue Salt Collective at Fraserburgh Lighthouse Museum. We experimented with a poem called Forest Fragments by reading it at the same time with a slight delay which created a very effective overlapping effect like an echo. This was accompanied by experimental music. We are continually striving to create a new experience for the audience.
I am currently writing new poetry to perform at Pittenweem Arts Festival on August 12th 2010.
