Floris BooksBiography:
Although I now consider myself a writer, mainly for children, originally I studied biology at university and went on to become an animal behaviour consultant with my own practice working from referrals from vets. During this time I had my first book published; The Animal Welfare Handbook, a work of non-fiction / textbook which resulted in many requests to deliver lectures and speak at conferences. Although originally from Yorkshire, I have now been based in rural Aberdeenshire for the last 25years where I am an active member of the artistic community, being involved in writing, drama, singing, and film-making. I have also taken part in Aberdeen Drama Festival, winning prizes in Story Telling, and Public Speaking, with my own work.
I am involved in charity work with the Riding for the Disabled, being a Trustee of my local group.
About writer's work:
My first children’s book of fiction is aimed at children aged 8-12 years; Red Fever won the 2010 Kelpies Prize, and has since been short listed for the Grampian Children's Book Award, and for the Heart of Hawick Children's Book Award. It has also been awarded a Highly Commended in the Scottish Children Book Awards!
I am also involved in short story writing and short-film screenplays/production. Some of my short stories, aimed at adults, have been short listed for such prestigious awards as The Fish International and the Bridport Prize.
About writer's events and projects:
I primarily work with children aged 8 -14 years. In my school visits I aim to entertain and inspire the pupils by talking about my work as an animal behaviourist and as a writer, and to help them understand the process of writing a book.
I enjoy working with children in workshops to encourage their writing and story telling abilities. I have also held Creative Writing workshops with older secondary school children. I am willing to work with all age groups and abilities and can adapt content and structure to suit requirements.
