Career a series of accidents, really, most of them fairly agreeable. Studied art and taught it, then slid accidentally into writing TV programmes for children. (Joe, Trumpton and Jackanory stories). About 36 books have followed. Won Guardian Children's Fiction Award, Literary Review Grand Poetry Prize. Lives and works on Arran, and is increasingly reluctant to leave it.
