I was born and bred in Edinburgh but now live in Orkney where I work in the Learning Support department of the local secondary school. My first booklet of poetry was published by Clocktower Press in 1991. At that time I was writing as Alison Kermack. I had a second booklet published under that name by Rebel Ink in 1993. I then had two children (girls) and further confused matters by changing my name to Flett. My most recent child (a boy) was born in 2003 and my most recent book of poetry Whit Lassyz Ur Inty was published by Thirsty Books, an imprint of Argyll Press, in 2004. About writer's work:
I’m probably best known as a poet though I’ve also had short stories published in various anthologies and have just completed my first novel. I use the Scots language a lot in my work: much of my poetry is written phonetically and although I don’t generally write phonetic fiction, I almost always throw in a handful of Scottish words. I haven’t written a great deal for children but I somehow managed to win the Belmont Prize for children’s poetry, a lovely one to win because the winners are picked from the shortlist by children. Whit Lassyz Ur Inty was also shortlisted for the Saltire First Book of the Year Award and my poem Lernin was voted one of the top 20 favourite Scottish poems in the Radio Scotland survey 2006. Oh, and my short story Here He Comes won the Hi-Arts short story competition 2007. About writer's events and projects:
I have read my work on radio and television and at events throughout Britain and abroad. I always try and make my readings as entertaining as possible with a mixture of poetry, short fiction and anecdote. I have also run creative writing workshops in secondary schools, at literary festivals and on writers’ retreats. Subjects covered include: finding a strong narrative voice; listening to lyrics - writing poetry; using dialect in writing.Language:
