The Scottish Book Trust children’s programme, in association with Dahl and Dahl ltd, held a special free celebratory event for P5 to S1 pupils to mark Roald Dahl Day 2008. Check out the pictures in our slide-show above.

The event saw pupils from 12 primary schools around Glasgow packing the Mitchell Theatre to watch a special 4-part video called Everything You Wanted to Know About Roald Dahl... but didn't know who to ask!

Brough Girling, a close friend of Roald Dahl's, was on hand to tell stories and answer questions from the Dahl-loving crowd, and Scottish writer and publisher Matthew Fitt, gave a fantastic reading from The Eejits, one of three Dahl books that has been translated into Scots.

A poll on the day revealed The BFG and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to be Glasgow pupil's favourite Dahl books. What's your favourite? Click on our blog and let us know!

Pupil Comments

Since I hardly knew anything about Roadl Dahl I though this would be a great chance to learn more, how writing this my heads bursting with idea! (So thanks!) This is what I learned…Ronald Dahl was born September 13th 1916, he had 5 children and went to work in Africa then flew aeroplanes and crashed hurt his back, had a dog called chopper who likes smarties but not blue, when he was young he get sent to boarding school and he got called boy because he was the only boy from all his sisters. Roald Dahl wrote in  a little hit at the bottom of his garden wich he built he would draw the curtain, tell children it had wolves in it so they wouldn't distract him, sit on his armchair write on yellow paper with yellow pencils. Roald Dahl loved chocolate and hated beards. One of his favourite books that he wrote was the BFG. I really enjoyed it and learned alot. Pictures: Plane crashing, blue smartie, chocolate and BFG book. Speech bubbles: Roald Dahl favourite colour was yellow. His favourite author was Beatrix Potter. He died in 1990. His first book was the gremlins. He died of Leukaemia.

Roald Dahl. I thought the Roald Dahl was great that we went to. I liked every part of it especially the movie part of it because I learnt so much. I liked the quiz because I got chosen one of the things.
Lean, Battlefield Primary

I though it was the best thing ever. It was amazing that he flew all those planes and that he was so tall that they had to put the plane seats back and make a special cockpit for Roald Dahl. His favirite coulor is yellow and that he lied about the gremlins. It was funny hearing the books in scot. his mad ideas about the dog choppers going in the baskets up to the ward and chopper got the first chocolates he hated the blue ones.
Guy, Battlefield Primary

I thought Roald Dahl day was an amazing experience and I have learned an awful lot about Roald Dahl. It was fun and educational. He must have been a funny man. I am especially amazed how is books  are so popular in every country. I like how he became so famous starting off writing in a newspaper after a plane crash. Even when I am feeling really dull I sit back and read a Roald Dahl book and it gets ma back into a happy mood because of how funny they are.
Keri, Battlefield Primary

The Dahl Day event at the Mitchell Theatre was absolutely Fan Dabby Double Dozy (Great). I have never really enjoyed reading books but after the event I couldn't wait to get a copy of Danny the Champion of the World! I found out lots of interesting facts about Roald Dahl, it was amazing to hear about where the inspiration came from, The ideas behind some stories were (ocitiagous?), No one in would ever think of writing a story from an apple, but he did and it looked fantastic. I am looking forward to my journey in reading the Roald Dahl collection, I know it's not going to be boring but inspiring and funny. A great day! Thanks.

When we went to Mitchell Theatre I had so much fun and it was really nice. I thought Roald Dahl day was really fun and funny! I liked seeing his hut and his wife on the DVD. I wished Roadl Dahl was still alive so we could maybe met him. I liked the DVD and the Scottish books were really good. It couldn't have got any better. I liked the red tie the guy was wearing and Roald Dahl sounded nice but a little bit sneaky.

On Tuesday my class went to The Mitchell library. When we got there we went into the theatre to learn more about Roadl Dahl. The theatre was beautiful. When we went in Roald's friend Brought and the owner of the Roald Dahl museum, Amelia, told us some interesting things about Roald Dahl. Then they let us watch a DVD about Roald Dahl split into four chapters and in-between each one. They let us ask them some questions. After we came out of the Theatre everybody got to buy books, but I brought my own book The BFG and got it stamped. It was a great day!
