Cathy Forde's Creative Writing Tasks
On the first Monday of every month our Virtual Writer in Residence, Cathy Forde, sets a creative writing task for you to try your hand at. You can read more about each task and watch videos of Cathy explaining them on our Virtual Writer In Residence pages.
Each month Cathy will read all of the entries and choose her favourites. We will post them here for you to enjoy. Remember to check each month in case your entry has been chosen!

Task 1: Opening Lines
These are the opening lines which made Cathy want to read more:
"A ghostly wind haunts the misty street."

Task 2: Character
The following two character descriptions were the ones which intrigued Cathy the most:
Name: Ross Paton
Gender: Male
Age: 14
Emotion: Happy, Friendly and Trying to Impress.
He is happy when he is with his friends and playing football. He also enjoys eating. He is friendly with everyone around him, even people that don't like him! Whenever anyone has a problem he fixes it. He is trying to impress a girl in high school and trying to show everyone that he is a very nice, responsible boy who helps everybody and most of all the best looking in his classes!
Ross’s secret ambition is to be a footballer or a traffic cop. Ross likes to play football, tennis, golf and goes boxing every 2 days. Ross’s favourite song is Down by Jay Sean and ‘Lil’ Wayne. His favourite band is U2, and loves to watch them at Hampden Park. Ross doesn’t have a girlfriend! He loves to eat pasta and pizza from any Italian restaurant. Ross dances like a maniac and doesn’t care about what other people say about his dancing. If he were to die he would die trying. He trusts his parents more than anyone in the world. He distrusts bullies, neds and gangsters. Ross is only afraid of heights.

When my character is proud she grins. When my character is embarrsed she blushes. When my character is friendly she chats & gets along well with people. When my character is hiding something she acts suspicious. When my character is hurt she trys not to let it show. When my character is trying to impress she does her best. My characters secret ambition is to see her grand children before she dies. My character likes to: relax, cook, spend time with her cat & going for walks… My characters afraid of death, My character doesn't trust anyone except her cat, poppy, My character would kill if somebody was continuely annoying her or her cat,
