The Promised One by David Alric is about an eleven year old girl called Lucy Bonaventure. Lucy is in a car accident and she suffers internal bleeding in her brain. When she gets out of hospital she is amazed to discover that she can talk to animals through her mind. She then embarks on an adventure to rescue some ill treated jaguars and her lost father in the Amazon Jungle.
The book is aimed at 10-12 year olds but is popular with many different ages. It is not aimed particularly at boys or girls but it is a more girly novel than a boyish novel.
The Promised One is an animal adventure novel as it is based on Lucy saving the jaguars in an action-packed adventure.
The language is not that difficult for anybody over 5-14 level C/D, about 10 years old. The simple language aids the story through Lucy’s adventure.
The characters are strong and well developed throughout the novel. They add variety to the novel from simple, selfless Lucy to her knowledgeable grandparents.
The ending is very slightly surprising with some unexpected relationships and families but a great finish to a fabulous novel. The ending leaves you wanting more and leaves quite a few questions unanswered. These questions are answered in the equally amazing sequel The Valley of the Ancients.
Overall I would give The Promised One 5 out of 5 because it is a wonderful story for all ages.
Katie
