Ostrich Boys is a novel by Keith Gray. It tells the story of three friends who have just suffered the loss of a friend. They decide to steal the ashes of their dead friend Ross, and to take them to the small hamlet of Ross in Scotland, so that they can give him a proper send off. Together the three boys, Kenny, Sim and Blake embark on a remarkable journey, travelling through the country they begin to understand more about themselves, and about Ross.
This teenage adventure novel deals with the powerful themes of death and how it can affect us and how friendship can help us to cope with anything.
Gray captures the feelings and behaviour of teenage boys very effectively, helping to make it a successful tale. He uses language appropriate for a teenage audience and effortlessly manages to draw the reader into the story.
The changing settings of the novel help to move the story along and maintain interest, as each new setting brings the characters new challenges.
Keith Gray uses strong characterisation, producing believable personalities who readers can identify with in the many different situations they find themselves in.
The novel comes with an unexpected twist at the end, which helps to make Ostrich Boys a powerful and memorable tale that will stay in readers’ minds for years to come!
