Night Rise is the third book in the Power of Five series. The genre is supernatural and the main characters are five fourteen-year-olds who were born at exactly the same moment. Night Rise begins about three weeks before the end of the second book, Evil Star, and is told mainly by ‘five member’ Jamie. His twin brother Scott is his soul mate. Each ‘five member’ has a special power, and Jamie and Scott can read each others minds and attempt a kind of mind control. When Scott is kidnapped by gunmen from the Night Rise Corporation, Jamie becomes a terrorism suspect. Three people dead in one afternoon, and all from the reach of his room.
In some ways Jamie is a good character because he is the weaker of the two twins and had always relied on Scott before they were split up. However, I think this is used in so many novels now that it loses its impact.
All of the five have the qualities a good hero needs and are loveable characters who you want to succeed in their actions.
The themes that this book focuses on are friendship, loyalty and trust. Jamie and Scott must have all these qualities to face each other.
The intended audience of this book is younger teenagers. The story and the way it is told appeals to the audience.
The thing that gets me about this book is that it is a fantasy story set in the real world. My favourite genre is fantasy, but one of the best things about fantasy is all the fascinating settings. Putting a fantasy story in the real world spoils it and makes it lose its “believableness” and magic. Nothing can be added to our world in our time without it becoming unbelievable.
As this book is in a series the end is a cliff hanger. It works ok, making you want to see what will happen, but you don’t get the feeling you have to read the next one. Also you can’t really tell whether the ending is happy or not, because there are two more books to go. I would recommend this series to people who like fantasy, but aren’t too attached to magical creatures and far away lands.
