Jodie Picoult’s novel My Sister’s Keeper is the story of a family whose thirteen year old daughter was specifically chosen as an embryo so that she could be a donor to her sister who has leukaemia. Anna the “designer baby” files a lawsuit against her parents suing them for medical emancipation. After winning the case there is an unexpected twist in store for the family.
The novel which will appeal to teens and adults alike, deals with leukaemia and how it affects families and relationships.
All the characters in this book are very strong; you can bring them to life in your mind.
The story is told from multiple perspectives. Sara, the mother, narrates the past covering how Anna was made and when Kate was diagnosed with leukaemia. All the other characters speak about the present, sometimes reflecting back on the past.
The ending of this book leaves you wanting more. My Sister’s Keeper is a definite five star must read.
