I Am Number Four - Pittacus Lore

I Am Number Four is a cross between fantasy and science-fiction and the way in which it is written makes for an extremely easy and enjoyable read.

The protagonist is from another planet that was attacked by the malicious Mogadorians, but several young and gifted Loriens escaped with their Cepans’ on a ship destined for Earth. The youngsters now spend their time training and honing their legacies to prepare for the inevitable time when the Mogadorians find them. The book is the story of one such youngster. They are protected by a charm cast before they left Lorien by an elder. It ensures that, so long as they remain apart, the Garde cannot be killed or harmed out of order and any attempt to do so will result in the attack being reversed on the attacker.

The characters, Henri and John, are very believable and the way in which they are portrayed makes you really feel for them. I really liked the book because it raised some real life issues. The main character, John, stands up to a bully, which is something that I am sure many young readers can relate to. Another issue that is confronted by the book is leaving a loved one. When John and Henri are compromised by the Mogadorians, John must face up to the fact that he may have to leave his girlfriend, Sarah. The issue that I felt was the most powerful was losing a loved one.

The ending is the only let down in the book, and even at that it is still good. I personally would have preferred more finality in the ending as the current one is too open.

In conclusion I think that I Am Number Four is an exceptional book. I really like the way that the author has merged alien culture and magic into the real world and bound it all together with touching real life issues. I would recommend it to anyone who likes fantasy, science-fiction or just a good read!

I give this book four stars, only losing one due to the ending!!
