The Hunger Games - Suzanne Collins

If you are in any way similar to me in that you are constantly searching for something different, something unusual, or even just a brilliant book, then you will love this.  The Hunger Games is the first instalment of Suzanne Collins’ new trilogy, aimed at older teenagers.  Covering modern day issues, such as poverty, government control, and child abuse, we are taken through protagonist Katniss Everdeen’s experience of the Hunger Games.

Set in Panem, a nation built up of a Capitol and 13 districts on the ruins of North America, the 74th annual Hunger Games are about to begin.  Due to previous rebellion, the Capitol have devised a new way of punishment comprising of 24 teenagers being thrown into an arena to fight to the death.

The author’s style really drives the story, with her constant suspense and cliffhangers around every corner, along with her believable characters and realistic dialogue, all of which are necessary in a successful teen novel.

Collins has cleverly left the book on a cliffhanger, leaving you craving for more, and leading onto the second book in the trilogy, Catching Fire.  This is a must read novel for teenagers, which has something for everybody, between its touching family moments and its brutal fight scenes, you would be crazy not to give this book a go.
